I began selling my own make of hydrophones because, quite simply, I felt the range of products out there wasn’t that good considering the prices being charged. I don’t ‘compete’ with other manufacturers as my hydrophones are custom built by a field recordist for other folks interested in this area of sound exploration & my prices are designed to make this technology accessible to as many folks as possible. Over the years lots of people have asked me for advice when deciding which make of hydrophone to buy & i’ve always give un-biased advice based on whats available at the time. Since I launched the c-series hydrophones i’ve had lots of requests for comparison tests & my reason for doing this now is that, simply, people want to get the best value for their spend & I believe in the products I offer. So, here is the same lake, recorded on the same day with 3 different types of hydrophone - the recorder (Sound Devices 702) settings were identical on all sections.

(4 seconds silence between each sample)

first 2 minutes recorded with JrF c-series hydrophones (£60 per unit with 5metre cable - longer cables currently at £1 per metre extra)

second 2 minutes recorded with Aquarian audio hydrophones ($169 per unit with 3 metre cable)

parabolic reflectors are an essential addition to the kit for any serious field / sound recordist. In essence the act as a natural 'zoom' for sound - noise-free amplification enabling the listener / recordist to isolate the sound of distant sound sources. Developed with the wildlife recordist in mind these dishes have been used for years to record the sounds of birds for example & are used all over the world by film, tv & radio crews.

The 'parabolic curve' is a specially designed shape, scientifically formulated to provide natural amplification.

I use one to not only capture natural sounds but to achieve interesting creative effects in all kinds of environments - such as locating small sounds in busy locations.

These particular reflectors are supplied ready for you to adapt for your own microphone option & without pre-cut holes. They have a focal point of 4 inches (this is the point where the beams of sound hit the microphone capsule) & are 23inches diameter, 7 inch depth. They were built by a respected sound recordist who has recently retired.

Constructed from vacuum-formed ABS thermoplastic.

please note: these come as just the disc itself & one has to create / attach ones own mic system (hence the lower cost). However a chap on one the recent courses I teach on came up with a really handy way to do this: basically it's an industry wide standard fitting for (wait for it) a toilet flush handle & when you mount one of those (complete with its handy collection of washers & twist caps) as a handle on the dish the 'bolt' of the handle protrudes into the dish to a height of 4inch - which is the focal point of the curve ! Then one can mount small microphones either onto that bolt or use it as a point at which to structure a further mic holder. I'm not sure if toilet handles are the same size in the rest of the world though ! (but I could always get one & supply it with the dish if not).

Q: do you use your microphones yourself ?

A: yes. I’ve been involved in the creative exploration of sound for over 30 years & I use

contact microphones & hydrophones extensively in my work. When I began making

these units I supplied them only to fellow artists / recordists, however a few years ago

I started a blog on various aspects of field recording & tested lots of other contact

microphones and hydrophones. I was surprised at the often poor quality of lower priced

units and at how much better the ones I made were even than some of the more

expensive models. As more and more people became interested in field recording I

heard lots of stories of people not bothering with contact microphones & hydrophones

after having trouble with other models on the market. So, I decided to begin selling

mine to the public. They are now used by artists, field recordists, musicians,

aquariums, universities, schools, wetland trusts, film & tv crews, swimming pool

technicians all over the world.

Q: whats the difference between the ‘standard’ & the ‘c-series’ contact microphones ?

A: the main differences are:

. the element on the c-series is larger, giving a wider frequency response & better

definition to the middle & bottom end sounds captured.

. the cable on the c-series is pro-quality, with lower handling noise & a more efficient

signal transfer to the jack.

. in addition, the c-series are constructed to offer increased durability and sturdiness.

. extra coatings of the unique ‘acoustic transfer’ coating have been applied, increasing

the signal level.

. standard contact microphones come with 2 metres of cable as standard, the c-series come

with 3 metres as standard (extra cable is available on request at a charge of £1 per metre)

Q: whats the difference between the ‘standard‘ & the ‘c-series‘ hydrophones ?

A: the main differences are:

. the element on the c-series is larger and has been specially designed to give a wider

frequency response & better definition to the middle & bottom end of sounds captured.

. the cable on the c-series is pro-quality, with lower handling noise & a more efficient

signal transfer to the jack.

. the injection-moulded capsule design has been chosen to provide an additional

character to the audible range & to assist in the weighting of the unit.

. extra coatings of the unique ‘acoustic transfer’ coating have been applied, increasing
the signal level.

Q: why does my c-series hydrophone float to the top when in water ?

A: the c-series has been specially weighted to suspend itself below the surface of the

water & away from the river / sea bed. However this can only be achieved once approx

2metres of cable is also in the water at the same time. If your c-series hydrophone is

floating to the top, simply feed more of the cable into the water.

Q: what is the foam / soft circular dot for on the c-series contact microphones ?

A: this is simply to provide some additional protection to the element when pressing the

microphone onto the surface to be recorded.

Q: what’s the best way to attach the contact microphones ?

A: I myself use electrical tape. Blu-tak is also a good method, however it will leave a

residue on the outer coating of the microphone.

Q: my recorder has XLR inputs. Why don’t you supply your products with XLR jacks ?

A: as someone who has used & developed this technology over many years I have tried

all possible methods to mount this technology to XLR jacks without compromising the

sound quality or signal stability. In designing reasonably priced units that offer very high

quality results the technology used in the elements cannot be mounted to XLR without

one of the pins on the jack being hot-wired for example & to do this often leads to

background noise & signal instability. Therefore, the best results are to use standard

3.5mm or 1/4 inch jacks. I myself use a Sound Devices recorder with XLR inputs &

use an adaptor to convert the 1/4inch jack units to XLR. I now stock a range of pro-built impedance

transforming adaptors & other adaptor cables. Click on the accessories tab on the home page for

more info.

Q: are you products compatible with the recorder I use ? & will I need a separate pre-amp ?

A: I've yet to find a recorder they aren't compatible with & for example lots of folks use my products with recorders such as:

You don't need an additional pre-amp in order to get good results & in fact all of the samples on the soundcloud player at the top of this page were recorded directly into the recorders used without any additional mixers, pre-amps or post production.

Q: what sounds will I hear with a coil pick up ?

A: with these simply devices it’s possible to hear the internal electronic signals of all kinds

of everyday items such as radios, tv’s, light switches, computers, mobile phones etc.

Q: it says that you have adapted the coil pick ups - what does this mean ?

A: basically, this technology has limiters applied in order to prevent them being used

for certain surveillance practices. I buy them from the factory & remove the limiters that

inhibit certain signals. This means that they are able to capture a wider & more

fascinating range of signals.

Q: what is the special ‘acoustic transfer coating’ that you use ?

A: this unique coating basically helps spread any sound captured across the entire surface

of the unit, therefore boosting the signal. In addition to the other methods I use, this

is one of the reasons my microphones offer such amazing results.

Q: why are your contact microphones & hydrophones cheaper than others on the market ?

A: my microphones can compete, in terms of results, with units costing £100’s of pounds

but are priced reasonably because, as a passionate listener & field recordist, I believe

people should have access to reasonably priced equipment which will also give them

results that encourage them to explore further.

Q: are the elements you use made specially ?

A: yes, they are made to certain specifications that offer better results than ‘off the shelf’

elements.

Q: if there’s a problem with any unit I buy from you what can I do ?

A: I always do my best to sort out any issue, no matter how long you’ve owned the item. If

the problem is down to damage to the unit I will do my best to repair it for you at cost. If
