hey,,,hello,
just want to know the difference between the hydrophones and the contact mic...

is it right to interpret that hydrophone is one kind of contact mic with waterproof ability?

and the contact mic you sell is a non-waterproof version of your hydrophones?

also,, can u deliver to hong kong?
and how much is the postage rate?

thanks!!

Hi,

1) yes, I can deliver to any country inc. hong kong & the postal rate is as per 'rest of world' option on the drop down menu.

2) no - hydrophones & contact mics are different: firstly the elements are calibrated & constructed to different specs for each, so that they pick up the very different sounds. The hydrophones are fully sealed with several special costings & the contact mics have different coatings that contribute to the sound of the signal.

sorry can I know more? how the coatings makes them different ?
if I contact these mic on the same surface,
like on the outside surface of a glass container, and let water drops into the container, suppose both of them record the vibration from the connection point of the glass, so will it record different sound in such case? and in what way different?

thankssss

you can contact me directly via email to discuss in more detail, but for now:

1) the elements in each are different designs - one is made to pick up the frequencies of signals in water & the other for surface vibrations.

2) the coatings assist in sealing the hydrophone & spreading the frequencies across the surface of the element. On the contact mic they spread the signal also & assist in the way the element responds to mid & low range frequencies.

Hello

If i record a whale , Which mic do you recomend ?

And can i use pcm handy recorder with your mic ?

Thanks.

Jez riley French said...

Hi,

either model will be suitable for this & if your recorder is an entry level hand held recorder then the standard hydrophone will be ok. The d-series is intended more for recorders / mixers with higher specification pre-amps.

thanks,

Jez

Hi Jez,

I'm looking to use a hydrophone for live vocal performance. Which model would you recommend?

Thanks.

Jez riley French said...

Hi,

either model will do - it depends slightly on what you're connecting it to - send me an email via the contact page. ta.

What's the spacial distance between the two mics used for stereo recording? Would it be different for say a frog pond than in the sea for dolphins? Does stereo even exists underwater?

Jez riley French said...

it does indeed depend on the specific location & 'stereo' is not the same as in air. Basically, depending on what is being recorded you can get interesting stereo spatial soundscapes or sometimes 2 mono pools of sound.

Hi I have a Sony PCM 10 recorder, is it worth getting this d series hydrophone rather than the standard model for use on this recorder? Will be using it for recording in ponds and rock pools.
Thanks

Jez riley French said...

thanks for your interest. With the PCM10 you'd be ok with a standard hydrophone - not only because of the pre-amps in that recorder but also as a 3.5mm socket is the only input.

Hello,

Could you tell me if your d-series would work with a Tascam DR 680?

Another question I have is about the time you could deliver one stereo pair in Barcelona.

All the best

Jez riley French said...

yes - they work with the DR680 & DR680 mkII.
